Science and Technology Week puts science and APEGGA
volunteers before the public, through a fun lineup of
interactive events. |
APEGGA Gets Behind Upcoming Science and Technology Week
BY TARA MADDEN
Public Relations Coordinator
Participants in Alberta’s Science and Technology Week,
Oct. 8-17, will be saying Discover Your Potential to young
people and everyone else with a receptive ear. This year’s
theme celebrates and promotes scientists, researchers and
technologists in Alberta and encourages students to pursue
careers in the sciences.
The 10-day event is an opportunity for APEGGA members across
the province to encourage student interest in science and
inform the public about the contributions made to society
by the engineering and geoscience professions. As in previous
years, the Association is organizing a number of events to
celebrate Science and Technology Week.
The Edmonton Rock and Fossil Clinic will be held 10 a.m.
to 4 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 16, at the Odyssium. Children and
adults alike are invited to bring in their found objects
for university geology students and professional geologists
to identify. Calgary will host a similar rock and fossil
clinic on Saturday, Oct. 23, at the Canmore Museum and Geoscience
Centre.
Calgary and Edmonton will both participate in Mall Science,
which will offer a variety of fun, hands-on science activities
for participants of all ages. Calgary Mall Science will take
place Saturday, Oct. 16, but dates in Edmonton have yet to
be confirmed. Check the October issue of The PEGG for date,
time and location details.
APEGGA branches are encouraged to participate in Science
and Technology Week by hosting activities in their communities.
Possible activities include Library Science Fun Days – many
branches participated in this event last year with great
success. In addition, branches can offer hands-on science
classroom presentations, career presentations for junior
and senior high school students, Mall Science and local tours.
Individual members can also play a role in Science and Technology
Week. Host an open house at your company or organization.
Volunteer a few hours to spend in a local classroom. Or drop
by any of the public activities being planned. Look for a
calendar of events in the October PEGG.
This year’s Science and Technology Week website, hosted
by Alberta Innovation and Science, will offer a variety of
contests and challenges for children, a calendar of events,
information about different scientific careers and the popular
Alberta Innovation documentary series, which was first broadcast
on Global Television.
Site visitors will also be able to order a free copy of a
2005 calendar featuring Alberta researchers and school children
involved in science. Check out www.scitechweek.gov.ab.ca when it’s launched on October 8.
