PROVINCIAL
SCHOOL CHALLENGES
Grades 1-12
"Visions of Things to Come"
Students from schools across Alberta are invited tocompete for prize
money to be used towards the purchase of school materials and/or field
trips.
Using limited materials, the challenges encourage students to think
creatively. The concepts involved in the projects are based on the
principles of physics, combined with structural and materials engineering
principles.
Physics - concepts of mass, density, distribution of mass, centre
of gravity, forces, statics, momentum and torque
Structural engineering - concepts of stability, balance, structural
design, tension and compression
Materials engineering - properties of materials and combining materials
There
may be other areas of science, engineering, technology and mathematics
that can be drawn into the activities. Teachers should tailor content
appropriately for the age and grade level of the students.
The competition takes place during National Engineering and Geoscience
Week, March 1-9, 2003. Winners will be announced and will be notified
by phone. Overall results for all competing teams will be posted
on the APEGGA web site shortly thereafter.
