APEGGA EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS

APEGGA Education Scholarships provide $2,000 per year for up to two years to each recipient. The scholarships, presented by The APEGGA Education Foundation are intended to enable individuals who hold a bachelor's degree in science or education to return to university to obtain a second degree, or to help those students obtaining combined degrees in education and science. Each scholarship is named for the annual APEGGA Teacher Award recipients See article in October PEGG.

The 2000 APEGGA Education Scholarship recipients are:

Jennifer Gordon

Attending the University of Alberta. Currently obtaining both a Bachelor of Science degree and a Bachelor of Education degree with a specialty in secondary mathematics. Ms. Gordon's scholarship is named for APEGGA Teacher award recipients Gwen Bodie, Shelley Facchinutti and Tamara Keirle.

Brad LeMaistre

Mr. LeMaistre graduated from the University of Calgary with a BSc. in physics in 1998. He recently graduated from the University of Calgary with a Bachelor of Education degree with a specialty in secondary science. Mr. LeMaistre's scholarship is named for APEGGA Teacher Award recipients Richard Baron, Manuela Casagrande and David Anger.

Kelly McKie

Attending the University of Calgary. Obtaining a Bachelor of Education degree with a specialty in secondary math and science. Ms. McKie currently holds a BSc.Eng. in geological engineering from Queen's University. Ms. McKie's scholarship is named for APEGGA Teacher award recipients Scott Jantzen, Dave Sherbinin and Herb Belter.

Candace McLean

Attending the University of Calgary. Obtaining a Bachelor of Education after degree with a specialty in secondary science. Ms. McLean currently holds a BSc. in biological sciences from the University of Alberta. Ms. McLean's scholarship is named for APEGGA Teacher Award recipients Donna Simon and Kelly Cogan.

Jaime Roberts

Attending the University of Lethbridge. Obtaining a Bachelor of Education after degree with a specialty in chemistry. Mrs. Roberts currently holds a BSc. in chemistry from the University of Lethbridge. Mrs. Robert's scholarship is named for APEGGA Teacher Award recipients Kelly Wilkinson, Brett Huculak and Jeanette Wegner.

APEGGA R. M. HARDY GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPS

One graduate student from the University of Alberta and the University of Calgary have received APEGGA R.M. Hardy Graduate Scholarships, valued at $2,000 each. Named in honour of the late R.M. Hardy, a former dean of engineering at the University of Alberta, the two awards are presented annually by The APEGGA Education Foundation to APEGGA members pursuing graduate studies in engineering, geology or geophysics at the U of A or U of C.

Alan Jones, P.Eng., is pursuing a masters degree in civil engineering with a specialty in snow and avalanche science at the University of Calgary. Mr. Jones' area of study involves avalanche runout prediction for short slopes, using statistical methods and climatology theory. His thesis will develop a much needed regression for short avalanche slopes, which will help locate resource and residential developments in Alberta's Foothills and where mountain slopes are less than 250 metres high. Mr. Jones currently holds a BASc. in geological engineering from the University of British Columbia.

Michael Wojcichowsky, E.I.T., is pursuing a masters degree in mechanical engineering, specifically in the field of fluid dynamics at the University of Alberta. He plans to develop computational models to simulate flow through a combustion turbine system to investigate the mitigation of hot gases. By understanding the relationship between the effects of hot streak mitigation and flow turning, he hopes to design a series of turbine blades capable of minimizing the corresponding pile up of hot gases onto their suction surfaces. Mr. Wojcichowsky currently holds a BSc. in mechanical engineering from the University of Alberta.
