CEA Showcases Alberta’s
Consulting Engineers

Techna-West Engineering Ltd., an Edmonton-based consulting company in business since 1977, was recognized with four awards for its ability to find innovative and practical engineering solutions on a diverse range of projects during the Consulting Engineers of Alberta’s Showcase Awards, held in Edmonton on Jan. 29.

Techna-West’s work on Fall Protection Safety Systems for Surety Manufacturing & Testing Ltd. earned an award of excellence in the international category and an award of merit in the small firm category. Using guard rails, anchorage points, horizontal lifelines and retractable lifelines, Fall Protection protects personnel working in an elevated position.

Judges’ citations in connection with the entry included: "The fall protection system is showing excellence in thinking through an innovative design that has huge benefits to health and safety on projects worldwide. This is not measurable in monetary value, but has huge benefits to society through prevention of death and grief."

Techna-West also received awards of merit in the small firm and project partnering categories for its work on the Inland Cement Plant upgrade.

The CEA awards recognize the achievements and contributions that Alberta’s consulting firms and their clients make to the economic and social well being of Albertans. This year, 15 engineering firms were recognized with awards of excellence and/or merit for their work in the following categories: technology innovation, project partnering, small firm, resource development, international, environmental and infrastructure. Winners are determined based on the project’s added value, benefit to society, management of risk, technical excellence, degree of difficulty, innovation and advancement of technology.

SNC-Lavalin Inc. was recognized as another multiple award winner. Its work on the Athabasca Terminal & Pump Station in Fort McMurray for Enbridge Pipelines earned an award of merit in the resource development category. For its work on a railcar wash facility for Dow Chemical Canada Inc. that can clean and return 30 railcars over the course of a 12-hour shift while requiring only two operators, (see story February PEGG page 8) SNC-Lavalin was given an award of merit for technology innovation.

Award winners received limited edition framed awards, by artist Ben Novak, P.Eng., illustrating the many skills and disciplines involved in all engineering projects
