For one hour all over campus, all that could
be heard was the jingling of coins in beer jugs and the boisterous
singing of the engineering song, announcing to other students
and faculty that "We are, we are, we are, we are, we
are the engineers!" Engineering banners hovered proudly
over a mass of engineering students rallying for a good cause.
Oct. 9 marked the annual Loonie Walk. It was the day that
engineering students stormed campus, raided the student centre,
momentarily disrupted classes, and invaded the territories
of other faculties. However, it was all done in the name of
charity.
The engineering students persuaded others to donate money
rather than use it for that cup of coffee - or let it fester
with their pocket lint. By donating to local charities, which
plays a role in many engineering events, engineering students
give back to the community while having fun. It is through
events like this that we remind others of the engineering
spirit and give quantifiable meaning to the phrase, "every
little bit counts."
In only one hour and from the mere coins in people's pockets,
$1,069.69 was raised for the Calgary Urban Projects Society.
"Loonie Walk was a great success. It's nice to see engineers
coming together for a good cause," says Curtis Sim, the
Engineering Students' Society president.
Pie Throw
It wasn't long ago that the images of faces covered in chocolate
or banana cream were seen in business offices throughout Calgary
and staff offices of the faculty of engineering. Yes, remnants
of the 2001 Pie Throw are likely still fresh in the minds
of those seeking revenge from last year's activities.
But not to worry. The time to avenge your honour draws near.
The filling flies Nov. 26 through 29 in the 2002 Pie Throw.
During these days you - Calgary industry professionals, students
and professors - may want to hold a little more cash than
usual. Don't say I didn't warn you.
For $5 or more, anyone can choose a chocolate, banana or lemon
pie and direct it towards a specific target. Once the order
is placed and paid for, a team of students will track down
your target.
But then that target has a choice: take the pie in the face
or redirect it at someone else for $5 added to the original
price. For example, if someone purchases a pie for $20, the
target/victim can redirect the pie back to its sender for
$25 or take the pie in the face.
However, all this pie throwing isn't just for entertainment.
Why hold this event?
All proceeds will go to a local Calgary charity. It's another
opportunity for engineering students, professionals and professors
to give back to the community.
If you would like to purchase a pie, please e-mail Allison
Hagerman, Engineering Students' Society events vice-president,
at ess@ucalgary.ca, or
call the ESS at (403) 220-5737. Last year, more than $3,100
was raised during Pie Throw. This year the hope is that, with
your continued support, the total will be exceeded.
