APEGGA EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS

APEGGA Education Scholarships provide $2,000 per year for two years to each recipient. The scholarships presented by The APEGGA Education Foundation are intended to enable individuals who hold a bachelor’s degree in science or education to return to university to obtain a second degree, or to help those students obtaining combined degrees in education and science. Each scholarship is named for the annual APEGGA Teacher Award recipients. (See September PEGG, page 11 ). The 1999 APEGGA Education Scholarship recipients are:

Marta B. M. Dmytruk

Attending the University of Lethbridge. Obtaining a Bachelor of Education, with a major in mathematics education. Ms. Dmytruk currently holds a B.Sc. in civil engineering from the University of Alberta. Ms. Dmytruk’s scholarship is named for APEGGA Teacher Award recipients John Descoteau, Carolyn Dyck, Pat Quinn and Brian Wilson.

Sanimar Sarpal

Attending the University of Calgary. Obtaining a Bachelor of Education. Specialty Field: Secondary Science. Ms. Sarpal currently holds a B.Sc. in biochemistry from the University of Calgary. Ms. Sarpal’s scholarship is named for APEGGA Teacher Award recipients Linda Hut, Jodie Mackie, Donna McCullough, Craig Schiissler, and Rocky Wilson.

Marie Caroline Standing, P.Eng.

Attending the University of Calgary. Obtaining a Bachelor of Education. Specialty Field: Kindergarten & Elementary Route. Ms. Standing currently holds a B.Sc. in mechanical engineering with distinction from the University of Alberta. Ms. Standing’s scholarship is named for APEGGA Teacher Award recipients Holly Morawski, Bob Palinka, Roxie Rutt, Neil Williams, and Earl Wolff.

APEGGA R. M. HARDY GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPS

One graduate student from the University of Alberta and one from the University of Calgary have received APEGGA R. M. Hardy Graduate Scholarships, valued at $2,000 each. Named in honour of the late R. M. Hardy, a former dean of engineering at the University of Alberta, the two awards are presented annually by The APEGGA Education Foundation to APEGGA members pursuing graduate studies in engineering, geology or geophysics at the U of A or U of C.

Daniel Dall’Acqua, P.Eng., is pursuing a M.Sc. in mechanical engineering at the University of Alberta. Mr. Dall’Acqua’s area of study involves finite element modelling of progressive cavity pumps, which are widely used in conventional and heavy oil production in Alberta. His research involves predicting the behaviour of various pump configurations in order to develop design rules useful to industry. Mr. Dall’Acqua currently holds a B.Sc. in mechanical engineering with distinction from the University of Alberta. He is employed as a mechanical engineer with Noetic Engineering Inc. in Edmonton.

James Paul Letourneau, P.Geol., is studying for his master’s in Earth and atmospheric science, specializing in petroleum hydrogeology at the University of Calgary. He is working on a project of his own design involving the hydrogeology/ petroleum geology of the Jean-Marie Member of northwest Alberta and northeast British Columbia. His research has the potential to lead to new exploration models for this reservoir or other carbonate reservoirs. Mr. Letourneau currently holds a B.Sc. in geology from the University of Alberta. He is president of Faber Geoscience Inc., a geology consulting practice in Calgary.
