If you are already registered as a Professional Geoscientist in Canada this section applies to you.
If you are going to practice geology or geophysics in Alberta you must be licensed as a Professional Geologist or Geophysicist or Foreign Licensee with APEGGA.
If you are a Canadian citizen or permanent resident (landed immigrant) of Canada, you should apply for licensure as a Professional Geologist or Professional Geophysicist.
If you are not a Canadian citizen or permanent resident (landed immigrant) of Canada, you should apply for licensure as a Foreign Licensee.
If you are applying for licensure as a P.Geol., P.Geoph. or Foreign Licensee
and are a geoscientist registered elsewhere in Canada, you must:
1. Meet APEGGA’s academic requirements.
2. Meet APEGGA’s experience requirements including at least one year of
equivalent Canadian geology, or geophysics experience.
3. Be of good character and reputation.
4. Demonstrate knowledge of law, ethics, and professionalism.
5. Satisfy the English Language Competency requirement.
APEGGA will contact your home association to confirm your registration as a P.Geo. in good standing there.
If you are registered as a Professional Geoscientist with one of the other Canadian provincial or territorial geoscience associations, the application process is simpler and quicker than if you are not registered elsewhere. APEGGA typically does not require that you have your academic institution send us your transcripts. We do, however, ask your home association to provide copies of your transcripts to us. APEGGA also typically does not need to contact references. Occasionally, however, APEGGA may need to contact your references or obtain transcripts and if so we will contact you to provide us with that information.
Also note that if you are a Professional Geoscientist who became registered
with another Canadian geoscience association through a grandfathering process
in which you did not have to write the Professional Practice Examination you
will need to pass the National
Professional Practice Examination before you can become licensed
as a Professional Geologist, Professional Geophysicist or Foreign Licensee with
APEGGA.
