APEGGA Education Foundation
Announces 1998 Scholarships

The APEGGA Education Foundation presents 12 awards to students entering the faculties of engineering or the departments of geology and geophysics at the University of Alberta, The University of Calgary or colleges in Alberta offering transfer programs. Each recipient receives $2,000 toward first-year studies in engineering, geology or geophysics. Listed below are the 1998 APEGGA University Entrance Scholarships recipients, along with the high schools they attended.

APEGGA Education Scholarship Recipients

APEGGA Education Scholarships provide $2,000 per year for two years to each recipient. The scholarships presented by the APEGGA Education Foundation are intended to enable individuals who hold a bachelor’s degree in science or education to return to university to obtain a second degree, or to help those students obtaining combined degrees in education and science. Each scholarship is named for the annual APEGGA Teacher Award recipients. (See also Sept. PEGG, Page 9.) The 1998 APEGGA Education Scholarships recipients are:

Scholarships of $2,000 each are available to students transferring from regional colleges or technical institutes to university engineering programs. The 1998 recipients (home town in brackets) are:

R.M. Hardy Scholarships For Two Graduate Students

One graduate students from the University of Alberta and one from The University of Calgary have received APEGGA R.M. Hardy Graduate Scholarships, valued at $2,000 each.

Daniel Healy, E.I.T., of Edmonton, is studying toward a doctorate in water resources engineering in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Alberta. Mr. Healy holds a bachelor of science degree from Mount Allison University and a bachelor of engineering (civil) from the Technical University of Nova Scotia, as well as a master’s degree in water resource engineering from the University of Alberta. He has been employed with the Stanley Consulting Group Ltd. since 1996.


The second recipient, Janice Miller, P.Eng., of Calgary, is working toward a PhD in the field of biomechanics at The University of Calgary. She is a 1995 graduate in mechanical engineering from The University of Calgary and most recently has been employed as a research assistant at the U of C.


Named in honor of the late R.M. Hardy, a former dean of engineering at the U of A, the two awards are presented annually by the APEGGA Education Foundation to APEGGA members pursuing graduate studies in engineering, geology or geophysics at the U of A or U of C.
