Hardy
Scholarship Winners
Pursuing Studies at U of A
Two professional engineers seeking post-graduate degrees at the University of Alberta, are the 1997 recipients of APEGGA R.M. Hardy Scholarships, each worth $2,000. Receiving the awards presented in memory of the late University of Alberta dean of engineering R.M. Hardy, are: William R. (Bill) MacMillan, P.Eng., and Matthew R. Johnson, P.Eng.
Mr. MacMillan holds a bachelor's degree in agricultural engineering obtained in 1982 from the Technical University of Nova Scotia and currently is working toward a M.Sc. in land and water resources. Most recently, he has been employed as a resource management engineer with Alberta Agriculture, Food and Rural Development in the Peace River region. He has been involved in the design of many resource projects and has been an active participant in the APEGGA Peace River Branch, including serving as its chair.
Mr. Johnson received a B.Sc. in mechanical engineering from Queen's University in 1992. Subsequently, he was involved in NSERC-funded research on turbulent jet flows. Starting in 1993, he began research at the U of A on gaseous combustion and pollution control, and obtained his master's degree in 1995 with a thesis on the development of an ultra-low emissions burner. He is currently seeking a doctorate in mechanical engineering and conducting research into environmentally efficient flaring in the energy industry.
