The APEGGA Community Service Award

Dr. Theodore Rozsa, P.Geol.

Ted Rozsa is successful in the oil and gas industry and is a strong supporter of the arts. He has an appreciation of and a commitment to the integration of art and science for the betterment of society. It is for this commitment he is honoured with the APEGGA Community Service Award.

Dr. Rozsa's career began in 1936, the year in which he graduated with honours from Michigan Technical University and obtained a position with Shell Oil Company. He later founded Frontier Geophysical Limited and developed Basset Oil Ltd. Currently, he is president of Rozsa Petroleum Ltd.

His interest in the arts is multi-faceted. Dr. Rozsa was a key player in establishing the Calgary International Organ Festival. He served two years on the Board of Governors of the Glenbow-Alberta Institute and was a major contributor to the construction of The University of Calgary's new arts building. He has also supported The Banff Centre, Theatre Calgary and the Calgary Chamber Music Society. His interest in the arts is best demonstrated by his words, "our policy is we give something back".

Many other awards and accolades have been bestowed on Dr. Rozsa. He was recognized by his peers in 1988, when presented with the first Gold Medal given by the Canadian Society of Exploration Geophysicists. The following year, a special award from the Canadian Music Council was presented for his outstanding contribution to music in Canada. In 1990, he was awarded an honorary doctor of engineering degree from Michigan Technological University, and an honorary doctor of laws degree from The University of Calgary. He was appointed an Officer to the Order of Canada in 1991 and in 1993 was presented by the City of Calgary with the Centennial Award of Merit for making a significant contribution to improving the quality of life in that city.
