TOPIC: The Challenges of Operations In Kazakhstan: The Growth of Oil and Gas Resources in an Under-developed Basin
Hurricane Hydrocarbons Ltd., a Calgary company started operations in western Canada in 1986, moved into the international arena in 1991 and acquired a major producing asset in the Republic of Kazakhstan in late 1996. The company developed a strategy to grow its oil and gas resource base in a under-developed basin. Hurricane has become the second largest foreign oil producer in Kazakhstan. It produces approximately 15% of Kazakhstan's oil, averaging over 143,000 bopd in the third quarter of 2002. Hurricane's reserve base is equal to approximately 10% of Canada's conventional oil reserve base. Hurricane, an integrated company, is now one of the largest Canadian independent oil producers in just 5 years.
Its first 6 years of operations have been filled with many challenges. Learn about those challenges, the strategy of the company and what it has achieved to date.
