History
The Foundation was incorporated effective December 13, 1996 under the Societies Act. The Foundation qualified for tax-exempt status, and was registered with Revenue Canada on January 1, 1997 as a charitable organization. It is an arms-length organization from APEGGA.
It was created to help ensure that the engineering and geoscience professions maintain and strengthen their support for education by encouraging APEGGA members to donate and/or endow funds for educational purposes. As such, it is a vehicle for APEGGA members and others to donate funds to be used to further the professional development to APEGGA members, their children and those who may enter the professions.
From a humble beginning, with APEGGA funding only, its assets have grown to over $1M and in the intervening years hundreds of students have benefited to the tune of about $1M. In 2008 a total of $1M is being endowed to the University of Alberta and the University of Calgary for initiatives that support the Foundations objectives. And, the 10 year forecast indicates that it will be able to expand its funding activities to include a broader range of activities.
Mission
To enhance and provide leadership and support in the education and development of engineers, geologists and geophysicists, and those who wish to enter the professions.
Raising Funds
Funds are raised through several means.
APEGGA members are encouraged to donate through the APEGGA annual dues invoice. These members, or a select group of them, are also subject to targeted mail or e-mail promotions.
Corporations are encouraged to contribute. APEGGA has been the largest contributor to date but APEGGA Permit holders will become the focus of an enhanced fundraising program that will enhance the Universities’ fundraising efforts.
The Foundation has been the benefactor of fundraising events. APEGGA’s Summit Awards and golf tournaments are notable examples.
Finally, the Foundation is always on the lookout for opportunities for leverage its funds with the funds of others. On two occasions, the Foundation (and previously APEGGA) has taken advantage of government matching programs to enhance its programs. The $1M endowment in 2008 is the result of the Alberta Government’s Access to the Future Fund which will match APEGGA’s contribution dollar for dollar.
Dispersing Funds
There are currently three funding programs.
The student achievement recognition program provides medals or scholarships for students who have high academic achievement and other non-scholastic achievements.
The student awards program provides bursaries to undergraduates and graduates who have demonstrated financial need.
The student outreach program provides funding for initiatives that encourage the brightest and the best to enter the professions.
As funds are available, the Foundation will look to enhancing these programs and will consider other opportunities. Examples include other outreach organizations, university chairs, labs, field trips, libraries, distance education and continuing education.
