Enbridge Head Named
Canadian Energy Person 2007

Patrick Daniel, P.Eng., of Calgary is the chief executive at Enbridge Inc. — and now also the Canadian Energy Person 2007.
Presented by the Energy Council of Canada, the award is given to those who exemplify integrity, industry acumen and commitment to community. Winners are leaders in energy, business and government sectors.
The list of past winners includes Roland Priddle, a former chairman of the National Energy Board, and Nellie J. Cournoyea, a former premier of the Northwest Territories.
“The committee felt that Mr. Daniel embodies the forward-thinking and innovative spirit that promotes the Canadian energy sector and enhances this country’s role as a major player in the world energy market,” said Energy Council President Carmen Dybwad.
Mr. Daniel has been involved in the energy industry for more than 30 years. He volunteers for community charities, including the United Way and STARS Air Ambulance.
Digital Imaging Nets Innovation Award
A picture might be worth a thousand words, but for one APEGGA permit holder, a digital image is worth being the top innovation in North America.
Calgary-based Imaging Dynamics Company has been awarded the Frost & Sullivan North American Technology Innovation of the Year Award for 2007. This award is presented to companies demonstrating outstanding achievement and superior performance — in this case, for technological innovation.
Frost & Sullivan noted that Imaging Dynamics had made a significant breakthrough in digital imaging by creating a front-end digital image using a single, very high density charge, coupled device camera. The business, research and consulting firm also noted that this technology offered a platform to produce high-quality digital X-ray images at the lowest system cost.
Water Recycling Program Produces Canadian First
Petro-Canada and the City of Edmonton have received the 2007 Global Ecomagination Leadership Award from GE Water & Process Technologies, a branch of the General Electric Company.
The award was presented to the duo for their water recycling program, which sees the oil refinery make use of recycled municipal wastewater in its industrial processing rather than fresh water.
This is the third time a Canadian company has received this award. The pair also received the APEGGA Project Achievement Summit Award in 2006.
Global Ecomagination Awards are presented to customers of GE Water & Process Technologies. Winners, the branch has deemed, have significantly impacted the environment with their projects.
University Professor Makes Top 40 List
Calgary Inc., a Calgary business magazine, has recognized Bill Rosehart, P.Eng., as one if its Top 40 Under 40 in 2007.
The 34-year-old professor holds 10 teaching awards and is also heavily responsible for attracting the North American Power Symposium to the University of Calgary. The symposium will take place in 2008. Dr. Rosehart also received the 2006 APEGGA Summit Award for Early Achievement.
Nanotech Professor Wins Research Award
You can’t see them with the naked eye, but the University of Alberta is duly impressed. Extremely thin coatings have helped earn one of their creators, Michael Brett, P.Eng., the University Cup.
The University Cup is awarded to a U of A professor who not only has stellar research skills and results, but is also a top-notch teacher. Dr. Brett’s students think he’s something special, says the university, just like his thin-film coating.
“We are building architectures in materials on a scale 100 times smaller than a red blood cell,” Dr. Brett said.
Dr. Brett has been recognized internationally for his work in thin-film engineering. He is also heavily involved in the creation of the U of A’s Micromachining and Nanofabrication Facility.
Award Cast On Permit Holder
Micralyne Inc. of Edmonton has been awarded the 2007 Foundry of the Year Award by EuroAsia Semiconductor.
The EuroAsia Integrated Circuit Industry Awards were presented in San Francisco, and Micra-lyne’s President & CEO Chris Lumb, P.Eng., was on hand.
The Foundry of the Year award is for the manufacturing service voted best by peers and customers for its ability to provide world-class manufacturing services — in an environment with great pressure on performance.
The EuroAsia IC Industry Awards celebrate innovation and best practice in an industry that demands technical achievement. The awards focus on the people, processes and products that drive the industry forward and recognize the vital individuals that enable a company to achieve success in a competitive global market.
Concrete Winner
It may be the hardest thing Cementec Industries Inc. has ever done.
The Calgary-based company is the creator of HARD-CEM, and it was recognized for creating the Most Innovative Product in Concrete Making Materials at the 2007 World of Concrete trade show held in Las Vegas.
HARD-CEM is an additive that makes concretes harder and more durable. It was developed in partnership with Teck Cominco.
Medical Student Wins Scholarship
David Sabapathy, P.Eng., has been awarded one of the annual Engineers Canada-TD Meloche Monnex Scholarships. The University of Calgary medical student will receive $7,500 towards completion of his MD. This scholarship is presented annually to three engineers who pursue a degree that is not engineering.
APEGGA Members Top the List
Alberta Venture Magazine, in cooperation with PriceWaterhouse Cooper, has released its annual list of the top 100 corporations in Alberta, ranked by revenues.
The top 10 listings are all APEGGA permit holders. They are Imperial Oil Resources Limited, Petro-Canada, EnCana Corporation, Shell Canada Limited, Suncor Energy Inc., Halliburton Energy Systems, Husky Oil Operations Limited, Enbridge Inc., Canadian Natural Resources Ltd., and Talisman Energy Inc.
Who’s Moved Where
Patrice M. Pelletier, P.Eng., has been appointed president and CEO of the Montreal Port Authority. Mr. Pelletier leaves his position as president of Edmonton-based L-3 Communications SPAR Aerospace Ltd. He takes with him more than 23 years of international experience, mostly in transportation.
Reg. A. Olson, P.Geol., has been appointed vice-president of exploration for Red Rock Energy Inc. of Calgary. Dr. Olson brings with him more than 35 years of experience from a variety of areas within the industry.
Rob Poole, P.Eng., of Calgary has been appointed vice-president of engineering and operations of Great Plains Exploration Inc. Mr. Poole has over 27 years of industry experience to draw upon in his new role.
Farhan Farshori, P.Eng., of Calgary has been appointed vice-president of corporate development for Global Energy Services Ltd. Mr. Farshori brings with him 15 years of oil-and-gas experience.
