Female engineers and geoscientists can help instill a passion for their
work in girls aged 11 to 18 — without leaving their desks. SCIberMENTOR, a joint
program of the University of Calgary and the University of Alberta, asks that
mentors commit 10 minutes a week for one-to-one, e-mail interaction.
Begun in November 2001, the program has grown from more than 150 matches to about
500 in its last full year. But SCIberMENTOR wants to keep growing, and recently
sent a recruitment e-mail to The PEGG.
“Our primary objective is to expand girls' knowledge of careers, opportunities
and benefits that exist for women in the health science, science and engineering
fields,” says the document. “The program is designed to motivate
girls to continue in the areas of math and science during their junior and senior
high school years through interaction with women who are studying and working
in these fields.”
Mentors and protégés receive guidance and feedback from program
administrators. Topics range from what work days involve to how work and family
life are balanced.
