Your Say On
Climate Change

Climate change – the implications surrounding it are many and varied. And so are the opinions of APEGGA members.

Where do you stand?

The APEGGA Environment Committee has devised a short consultation survey, so you can help APEGGA address the challenges this complex issue presents. We’re interested in what you believe and what you think – when it comes to the science and public policy of climate change.

You may complete and return the survey online, right now, or mail or fax the paper version in your October PEGG. Your participation is appreciated. Results from the survey will be reported back to the membership in a PEGG article and online.

Last Call:

Mentoring Conference

APEGGA’s second annual National Mentoring Conference is gearing up to be just as successful as the inaugural one. Registrations are coming in from across Canada and from various professions. Under the banner Celebrating Mentors, the conference in Calgary kicks off Thursday, Oct. 25, with a banquet and continues Friday, Oct. 26, with a full day of speakers, presentations and break-out sessions.

Another Last Call:

Summit Nominations

Your greatest achievers and achievements will be honoured at the 2008 Summit Awards gala, and we want to ensure we’ve got the best selection of nominations we can gather. Deadline for nominations has been extended to Oct. 31.

Volunteer Code of Conduct

Hundreds of APEGGA members volunteer for our committees, boards, task forces, Outreach Program and many other programs, which reach thousands of children, students and adults alike. Our volunteers help APEGGA tremendously by delivering many of the programs and services that make us what we are to members and the general public.

Similarly, as APEGGA representatives their conduct reflects on APEGGA. Our image as a professional association is largely shaped by these volunteers.

For that reason, your Council has approved a new Volunteer Code of Conduct.

DID YOU KNOW. . .

About Our Secondary Professional Liability Insurance Program?

APEGGA engineers, geoscientists and R.P.T.s automatically have extra protection for personal liability arising from practice in non-consulting occupations. Paid for in your annual dues, this coverage also may extend to past employees of consulting firms who no longer have access to other professional liability insurance.

APEGGA Rocks

Our annual and Rock & Fossil Clinics – always a bit hit with the whole family – are just a few days away. The clinics take place Saturday, Oct. 20, in Edmonton and Canmore.

Geoscientists will identify materials collected by the public. Each Rock & Fossil Clinic also includes a guest speaker and a hands-on geoscience workshop for children.

Did you know diamonds are derived from volcanoes? Roy Eccles, P.Geol., with Alberta Geological Survey, will show and tell all about volcanoes in his presentation at the Edmonton clinic.

Do Hector Lake, Mount Hector and Kicking Horse Pass ring a bell? Ernie Lakusta, author of The Intrepid Explorer: James Hector’s Explorations in the Canadian Rockies, will be at the Canmore Geoscience Centre to share exciting stories and photos about the Palliser Expedition.

Note: In Edmonton, attendees must purchase general admissions at the TELUS World of Science – Edmonton to participate in the hands-on workshop and hear the guest speaker.
