CHAMBER CHARGES REFUTED
APEGGA President David Chalcroft, P.Eng., Responds to Trade Barrier
Allegations
|
David Chalcroft, P.Eng. |
Canadian professionals, including “engineers from
the Maritimes,” are
being intentionally kept from jobs in Alberta by archaic trade barriers, the
President and CEO of the Calgary Chamber of Commerce has charged. In a column
published in the Aug. 29 Calgary Herald, Heather Douglas implies that APEGGA
and other professional self-regulators have an interest in keeping professionals
out of Alberta.
“The interprovincial trade blockades are towering,
hard to penetrate and effective at keeping skilled labour out,” she wrote. “We
call that medieval.”
According to Ms. Douglas, Canadian provinces have since
Confederation “built
higher and stronger trade barriers to protect their turf.”
Ms. Douglas is apparently unaware of the professional mobility
already enjoyed by Canadian engineers and geoscientists. Setting the record straight
is APEGGA President Dave Chalcroft, P.Eng., who has responded to The Herald with
a letter to the editor.
