CANNON AT
THE HELM
Her true home, she says, is the University of Calgary. It’s
only fitting, then, that Dr. Elizabeth Cannon, P.Eng., a two-time APEGGA Summit
Awards winner, takes over as the Schulich School of Engineering Dean, effective
July 1. Outgoing dean is Dr. Chan Wirasinghe, P.Eng.

VOLUNTEERS, WE NEED YOU
Do you have a volunteering streak just waiting to burst forth? Well, perhaps
APEGGA can help.
We have a number of opportunities for you to give back
to the professions by becoming a volunteer. Please note, we can’t always
guarantee placement on a committee or in an APEGGA program, but we do keep a
list of members interested in volunteering.
The following APEGGA departments currently need volunteers.

BECOME A BETTER COACH
Coaching refers as much to the workplace these days as it
does to the minor soccer pitch. But do you know how to coach your staff in an
effective, positive way?
Coaching for Commitment can help. It’s a course designed
to help you foster sustained superior performance, and it’s coming very
soon to the APEGGA conference centres in Edmonton and Calgary.
This two-day course presented by Rachelle Lee of Einblau & Associates

ENVIRONMENTAL SITE
ASSESSMENT
UPDATE
Professional regulatory organizations are coming up
with a standard members will have to follow when they perform environmental
site assessment, reclamation and remediation work.
APEGGA, biologists, chemists, foresters, forest technologists and agrologists
continue to draft a joint practice standard for the work. This standard will
discuss the professional and ethical issues associated with completing reclamation
and remediation in Alberta.
To discuss specialist sign-off, Alberta Environment is holding
meetings with the same organizations, ASET, and Alberta Human Resources and Employment.
These will help determine who can sign-off reclamation certificates and on what
portions of the work, as well as what sign-off entails.
In related news, Alberta Environment has announced changes
in the management of contaminated petroleum storage tanks. Effective June 9,
all petroleum storage tank environmental site assessment reports must be signed
by a member of APEGGA before they are submitted to Alberta Environment.

A
LETTER TO THE PM -
AND YOUR RESPONSES
Last month, we sent you an e-PEGG Extra featuring a
letter from President David Chalcroft, P.Eng., to Prime Minister Stephen Harper.
The letter stood up for member Gwyn Morgan, P.Eng., in the wake of a committee’s rejection
of Mr. Morgan’s nomination to chair the Public Appointments Commission.
Some of you liked the letter and others didn’t.

TWO GUIDELINES
AWAIT
YOUR COMMENT
APEGGA continues to update and improve guidelines to help members perform
at their highest level. But the process requires your help.
Right now, two APEGGA documents – one on managing risk and the other
on selecting consultants – need your input before final approval.
Subcommittees of the Practice Standards Committee have made available near-final
drafts of the Guideline for Management of Risk in Professional Practice and
the Guideline for Selecting Engineering, Geological, and Geophysical Consultants.
