Rock Solid Professionalism is the theme of APEGGA’s
2008 Annual Conference in Edmonton, which ties in perfectly with International
Year of Planet Earth and the approaching term of President-Elect Gordon Williams,
P.Geol. The conference and Annual General Meeting take place April 17-19, and
we’ve got the information to help you make your conference plans.

Can't attend the Annual General Meeting in person? Attend
via webcast. APEGGA is pleased to provide members with a no-travel option through
the convenience of your own personal computer. If you choose this option you
will be able to submit questions but you will not be able to vote.

Calling All Visual Artists
It’s become a staple of the Annual Conference – the
APEGGA Art Show. Set for April 17, just before the 2008 Summit Awards Gala in
Edmonton, the seventh annual show seeks paintings, sculptures and photographs
from members and their families.

2008 APEGGA Teacher Awards
Members are asked to promote and nominate teachers in Grades
1-12 who inspire learning in science and math. Circulate the link below to parents
at your workplace, send the link to the Parent Advisory Committee at your child’s
school, and talk to your children about initiating a nomination at their school.
The APEGGA Teacher Awards recognize science and math teachers
whose superior teaching skills have made math or science fun and inspired students
to succeed academically. Award recipients receive an award and recognition,
and the school receives $2,000 to further science and math education. A
total of 14 teachers in Alberta will be selected as award recipients.
Nomination deadline has been extended to April 15.

Mentors Wanted
Would you like to give back to your profession in a direct,
fulfilling way? The APEGGA Mentoring Program could be for you. It allows you
to share your knowledge, reach pools of new talent, enhance your coaching skills
and earn Continuing Professional Development credits.
We have a particular need for mentors in the Edmonton and
Calgary areas.

The application deadline date of April 1 for
the Léopold Nadeau TD Meloche Monnex-Engineers Canada Scholarship
is fast approaching.
The scholarship provides financial assistance of $10,000 to engineers returning to university for further study or research
in the area of public policy development.

2008 Global Marathon on Women in Engineering
March 26-27
The Global Marathon is supported by corporations such as: IBM, BP, and Fluor, and the efforts of many engineers. At any and all times during a 24-hour period a “conversation” will take place somewhere in the world on issues for, by and about women in engineering. The marathon is a combination of live Internet chats and teleconferences, and all are accessible to a worldwide audience.

Judges needed for online Science Challenge
Members are again invited to judge the Wonderville.ca Science Challenges, organized by the Science Alberta Foundation. The challenges, designed for Grades 7, 8 and 9, are integrated into science classes to engage and inspire the next generation of engineers, designers, and scientists with hands-on solutions. This year organizers advise that a science or engineering degree is not a prerequisite, so you, your family and your friends can help.
