Dr.
Harvey P. Weingarten became the seventh president
and vice-chancellor of the University of Calgary
on September 1, 2001. The University of Calgary,
a $500 million operation, is Calgary's fourth largest
employer with about 4,000 employees and more than
30,000 students registered in degree programmes.
A distinguished scholar and researcher in the
fields of psychology and medicine, Dr. Weingarten
came to the University of Calgary from McMaster
University, where he served as provost and vice-president
(academic) from 1996 to 2001. He is renowned throughout
Canada's higher education institutions for his
leadership, scholarship, and commitment to post-secondary
education.
A native of Montreal, Dr. Weingarten holds a
BSc from McGill University, and a MS, M.Phil.,
and PhD from Yale University. He joined McMaster
University as a member of the faculty in 1979,
and went on to become chair of that university's
Department of Psychology in 1989, full professor
in 1990, and dean of McMaster University's Faculty
of Science in 1995.
Dr. Weingarten's research topics include psychological
and biological controls of eating and eating disorders.
His work has been widely published and supported
by a series of grants from the Natural Sciences
and Engineering Research Council and Medical Research
Council of Canada (now the Canada Institutes of
Health Research).
Dr. Weingarten is a dedicated and distinguished
undergraduate teacher and, from 1984-97, he was
the primary supervisor of 19 graduate students
who graduated with M.Sc. and PhD degrees.
He has served on the Boards of The Canadian Centre
for Creative Technology (Shad Valley), The McMaster
Museum of Art, The Industry-Education Council,
The Centre for Health Economics and Policy Analysis,
and The Fields Institute for Research in Mathematical
Sciences.
He currently serves on the Board of Trustees
for the Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical
Research, the Board of Directors of the Calgary
Canadian and Chinese Economic and Cultural Foundation,
the Board of the Miller Thompson Foundation, and
the Board of Directors for Calgary Technologies
Inc. Dr. Weingarten is also the Honorary President
of the Canadian Psychological Association for
2002-2003.
His recreational pursuits include working and
watching television. Dr. Weingarten and his partner,
Barbara Markman, have two daughters.
